Need help making a theme statement from the novel To Kill a Mockingbird! Thank you for all your help :)The theme I have chosen is about Scout...

A thesis statement is usually
one sentence that describes what the enitre essay will be about.  A
theme is a universal idea about the novel that everyone can
relate to.  If your thesis is too narrow, you create a lot of work finding evidence to
prove it. You might want to consider adapting your thesis to something that is a bit
more broad.

If you want to keep the focus on
"womanhood" you could write about how women are treated overall in the novel and in this
time period (include Scout, but not limited to just her).  If you want to keep the focus
on Scout growing up, you could discuss the moral development of both Scout and
Jem.

An example thesis statement would be:
"Scout and Jem are expopsed to many experiences that shape their sense of
right and wrong, leading each of them to a greater understanding of the essential nature
of mankind."

Some other examples of
more broad themes that you could find ample evidence
from novel:

  • prejudice vs
    tolerance

  • loss of
    innocence

  •  judgement

  • loyalty

  •  acceptance

In
addition, e-notes provides excellent examples of several themes and thorough
explanations for each at the link below.  Good luck!  :)
