The beauty of this assignment is that it is completely
creative writing. This means you get to make up all of the details
about which you will write. I encourage you to let your imagination run wild, be
original, and have fun.
The assignment dictates that you
are writing a news report. Keep in mind that newspaper articles are written at about a
5th or 6th grade reading level. This means short sentences, short paragraphs, keep to
the facts, and include little to no opinion.
Most news or
journalism articles answer the 5 W's: who, what, when, where, why? To make this
assignment easy, you could treat it like a real news report and make a quick list of
these details. Pretend like you have interviewed crime scene investigators, family
members, and/or personal friends of the victim. Once you've brainstormed a list of
details, weave the story together piece by piece, and keep it
simple.
As far as "mysterious death" is concerned, your
first detail might be deciding if this was an accident, a murder, or a suicide. Then,
go from there.

on how to write in a journalistic style.
