CHAPTER 1. Jem and Scout
display their tolerance toward Dill, whose dress and manner are quite different from
their own. They soon become the best of friends. The children are friendly with Miss
Stephanie, the "neighborhood scold" and the prime source of gossip in
Maycomb.
CHAPTER 2. Scout
shows tolerance toward her first grade teacher, Miss Caroline, returning to school each
day in spite of her teacher's opinionated statements against Atticus. Scout also
befriends Walter Cunningham Jr., the poor farm boy whose father had been Atticus'
client.
CHAPTER 3. Atticus
explains his rule of tolerance with his suggestion that Scout "climb into his skin and
walk around in it" before judging
people.
CHAPTER 5. The
children get a lecture from Atticus about "tormenting that man"--Boo Radley. "What Mr.
Radley did was his own business," Atticus explained.
