In a poignant scene, the creature describes to Victor the
effect of such books as Paradise Lost upon him since he identifies
with Adam, who also is united by not link to any other being. Further, the creature
tells Victor that he has found some paper in the pocket of "the dress....taken from the
laboratory." These papers are from a journal written four months before Victor's
fashioning of his creature. In these papers, Victor Frankenstein records in painstaking
detail every step which he has taken in the "progress" of his work. In addition, this
recording is intermingled with documentation of domestic occurrences. The creature tells
Victor,
"I
sickened as I read. 'Hateful day when I received life!'....'Accursed creator! Why did
you form a monster so hideous that even you turned from me in
disgust?"
The creature
bemoans the fact that God created man in His own image, beautiful and alluring, while
his form is but a "filthy type" of the human one, made even more horrid by its perverse
resemblance. Even Satan, remarks the creature, had his admirers, but he is alone,
"solitary and abhorred."
