In To Kill a
Mockingbird, Scout and her teacher, Miss Caroline, have a strained relationship. Miss
Caroline is new to the area and doesn't fit in very well. Scout doesn't make things
easier for her when she steps in to explain the situation with Walter's lunch. In fact,
Scout doesn't make things easy for Miss Caroline in many other situations as well. Miss
Caroline also has trouble teaching Scout because she is already ahead of her classmates.
Atticus has taught Scout to read. Miss Caroline's teaching method is dependent upon the
students following her specific formula for learning to read. Since Scout is so far
ahead, Miss Caroline has trouble instructing her and controlling her behavior.
