When Elizabeth conversed with Wickham while dining at her
aunt and uncle's house in Meryton, the Philipses, Wickham informed Elizabeth that he and
Darcy had grown up together, that Wickham's father had been a legal consultant and
confidential friend of Darcy's father. When Wickham's father died, Darcy's father
promised to provide for Wickham. Hence, he became Wickham's godfather. Now deceased
himself, the late Mr. Darcy intended Wickham to be the clergyman of the church, a
valuable living, on the Pemberley estate. Wickham reported that Darcy gave the living to
another man, saying that Wickham was extravagant and imprudent. He further argues that
Darcy did it because he felt jealous of his father's fondness of
Wickham.
