Allied forces landed on five French beaches on D-Day, June
6, 1944. The landing forces came from three of the Allied nations. British troops landed
on the beaches that had been code-named Gold and Sword. Canadian troops landed on Juno
beach. American troops landed on Omaha and Utah
beaches.
Looking at a map of France, all of these beaches
are located along the northern coast of France, in the province of Basse-Normandie
between the towns of Cherbourg on the west and Caen on the east. In order from west to
east, the beach locations were Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and
Sword.
