The scientific name for salt is halite. This is derived
from the Greek word halos for salt and lithos for rock. It is formed from evaporites
from the ocean or from the continents. It can be found where there were once ancient
seas that have long since evaporated. The chemical composition of salt is sodium
chloride and its formula is NaCl. Halite is found worldwide.
