Dr. Harvey Cushing (1869-1939) published his first
description of the disease for which his name was associated in 1912. Cushing's Syndrome
is

an endocrinological syndrome caused by a
malfunction of the pituitary gland which he (Cushing) termed "polyglandular
syndrome."
Cushing first
diagnosed the disease in a patient, "Minnie G.", in 1910 (or possibly earlier, since the
information came from a lecture in December 1910). Minnie had many of the now common
symptons, including hirsutism (extreme hairiness), loss of hair, obesity, florid
bruising and a short stature. Cushing believed that she may have had the disorder for
many years. Cushing "brilliantly speculated" that the disorder may have been related to
hyperadrenalism, somewhat similar to Addison's disease. He later identified the disease
in 47 other cases of "polyglandular syndrome."
