Bruno does not give Shmuel a candy bar in the book. When
he first meets Shmuel, he wishes that he had brought some chocolates with him or pastry,
but he didn't. Later, when Schmuel asks him if he has any food on him, Bruno says "I
meant to bring some chocolate but I forgot." (pg 131) He talks about chocolate and how
much he likes it, but when he brings Shmuel food, it is bread, meat, or something from
dinner. Once in a while he would bring him chocolate cake, but most of the time he
would eat it before he got to the meeting point. (pg 161). There would be so little of
it left that he was embarrassed to give it to Shmuel. Bruno promised to bring Shmuel
something special on their last day together, the day before he was moving back to
Berlin. However, he didn't bring him anything.
