Calypso lives in a great cave on the island. A great fire
burns on the hearth. The fire causes a fragrance of cedar and juniper as each type of
wood burns.
At the loom, while weaving with a golden
shuttle, Calypso sings sweetly. All around the cave grows "luxuriant wood, alder and
poplar and sweet-smelling cypress." Birds with long wings live in the trees. Owls and
falcons and sea-crows create nests in the "luxuriant"
trees.
A trailing garden vine with rich, lush clusters runs
along the hollow of the cave. Four fountains flow bright water. Soft meadows of violets
and parsley bloom.
