This is the pivotal chapter in To Kill a
Mockingbird. Jem and Scout head to the Halloween pageant at the school and
are attacked afterwards by Bob Ewell. Jem scares Scout a bit during their walk to the
school, and then they're both scared by Cecil Jacobs. Jem volunteered to carry Scout's
ham costume, and she thought "it gallant of him to do so." Since they had to pass the
Radley house, Scout told Jem
"I'm right glad you're
along."
After Scout goofed up
her entrance on stage, Jem tried to make her feel
better.
How he
could tell I was feeling bad under my costume, I don't know, but he said I did all
right... Jem was becoming almost as good as Atticus at making you feel right when things
went wrong.
Shortly after,
Jem proved his real gallantry be defending Scout from Bob Ewell's
assault.
