What is the standard of living in Afghanistan?

Afghanistan is very much a developing country or what was
once called a Third World country.  It is a very poor country whose inhabitants have low
life expectancies and little education.

For example,
Afghanistan's GDP per capita (a rough measure of how much money is made per person in
the country) is only $1,000.  For the sake of comparison, this is 212th out of 229
countries listed in the CIA World Factbook.  In other words, very
few countries are poorer than Afghanistan.

For another
example, Afghanistan has an infant mortality rate of 149 deaths per 1000 live births.
This is a terribly high number.  Only one country in the world has a higher
rate.

Please follow the links for much more in the way of
statistics on this subject.
