People in the South are generally friendly. They are
outgoing--gregarious. They enjoy socializing and planning or attending big weddings and
barbeques, etc.
Emily is in conflict with the whole
Southern outlook on life. She is withdrawn and lives in isolation. She will never marry
because her father will not have it. By the time her father dies, she is no longer young
and beautiful. She will remain a spinster.
This isolated
life she lives is puzzling to her community. They cannot understand why she will not
socialize. They try to visit but Miss Emily will not have visitors. She does not allow
visitors because she does not feel like being social. She is quite unhappy, probably
because her father was so strict and controlling.
