perilous - dangerous, but more than that possibly
leading to tragedy or peril (death). The early sttlers coming to the new world faced a
perilous journey because many of them perished (died) trying to get to
America.

daunting - a task that is daunting may seem
impossible. It is extremely difficult, to say the least. It may have seemed like a
daunting task to undertake a journey to a new world, but in the end the settlers who
came to America were successful.

a lot like daunting. It is extremely difficult.

this word is actually spelled demeanor and it refers to the way that you carry yourself.

Symbols are when w writer
uses an object or idea to represent something else.  It is usually something that the
author feels is significant in the life of the person or central to the stories

A good example of symbol use is found in the book
"Lord of the Flies."  The boys in the story take a pig's head and stick it on a stake
that is pointed at both ends.  Then the head is lodged into the ground.  The head
represents a religious icon as the boys move away from civilized behavior.  It also
represents the savage behaviors that the boys engage in.

"Republican motherhood" is a term from the time of the
American Revolution and shortly after.  During that time, of course, the US was becoming

that the regular postman has had a "terrible accident," and that the mail would have to
be picked up in town until a new postman is ready to take over the route. Elijah is
given one package and a letter. His heart sinks when he sees that the letter is for Mrs.

Upon arriving at home,

for Mrs. Holton, Ma dresses in her Sunday clothes and makes Elijah do the same. Before
leaving for Mrs. Holton's place, Ma cautions Elijah, telling him he will have to read

to offer their support, and when they arrive at Mrs. Holton's home, she welcomes them,
even though she knows that they bring bad tidings. The letter, written in flowery

Mrs. Holton does not flinch as Elijah reads the letter, and when he is done, she bravely
